Lifting and carrying loads

The lift that hurts someone is almost never the heavy one. It is the one nobody thought about.

Manual handling 10–20 min per run

The back goes on the load nobody thought about.

People are careful with a load that looks heavy. The injury comes from the box picked up in passing, at arm's length, with a twist, because stopping to set up for it felt ridiculous for something that light.

This one is for everyone who lifts as part of the job rather than as the job. It is about the small, quick, unconsidered lifts, which is where the reportable accidents actually come from.

What a team does in it

One run, three parts. A team can go back to any of them as often as it needs, and most do.

  1. 1

    Judge the load first

A team takes on a series of loads and says, before touching each one, what is going to be hard about it.

  2. 2

    Set up and lift

They get the feet, the grip and the path right, and feel the difference on the same load twice.

  3. 3

    Do it under time pressure

The pace goes up. They work on keeping the set-up at the point where there is a reason to skip it.

What is included

Manual handling

Lifting and carrying loads

10–20 min per run

Included with every module

  • The training itself, repeated as often as you need.
  • Equipment supplied, maintained and replaced.
  • Attendance is recorded and exports into the records you already keep.
  • We run the first sessions with your team, then hand over.

Put it on your shortlist and we go through it together, with nothing to decide yet.

Next to it in the same cluster

Teams that meet this hazard usually meet the others on the same shift. The cluster page Manual handling holds all of them together.

Take the loads your people actually lift.

Bring the part of your assessment that names manual handling. We build the training around your own loads and run it.

What happens in the demo

  1. You pick the hazard From your own risk assessment, not from a demo script.
  2. We go through the training Start to finish, the same version your people would get.
  3. We look at your site Who would run it, on which shifts, and what a first group needs.
