Anchor points and fall arrest, roof work

On a roof there is rarely a good anchor point where you want one. Choosing the second best one is the skill.

Falls from height 15–25 min per run

The anchor point decides the fall, not the harness.

A harness is worn by everyone. What separates a stopped fall from a swing into a parapet is where the line was fixed, how much slack it had, and whether anyone worked out the clear distance below before stepping out.

This one is for roofers and for the supervisors who have to say yes or no to an anchor before work starts. It goes through roofs where the obvious point is missing, occupied, or not load bearing.

What a team does in it

One run, three parts. A team can go back to any of them as often as it needs, and most do.

  1. 1

    Read the roof

A team finds the load bearing points, the fragile areas and the edge without a parapet, before anyone sets foot on it.

  2. 2

Pick the point and the length

They choose an anchor, work out the clear distance below, and shorten the line until a fall would stop above the ground.

  3. 3

    Stand in the fall

The line goes tight and someone is hanging. The team works through getting them down, and how long they have to do it.

Included with every module

  • The training itself, repeated as often as you need.
  • Equipment supplied, maintained and replaced.
  • Attendance is recorded and exports into the records you already keep.
  • We run the first sessions with your team, then hand over.

Put it on your shortlist and we go through it together, with nothing to decide yet.

Next to it in the same cluster

Teams that meet this hazard usually meet the others on the same shift. The cluster page Falls from height holds all of them together.

Take one roof off your list and work it through.

Bring the part of your assessment that names roof work. We pick a roof from it and go through the training start to finish.

What happens in the demo

  1. You pick the hazard From your own risk assessment, not from a demo script.
  2. We go through the training Start to finish, the same version your people would get.
  3. We look at your site Who would run it, on which shifts, and what a first group needs.
