Laboratory safety

A lab is orderly until one thing is out of place, and then the order is what hides it.

Hazardous substances and fire 10–20 min per run

In a tidy lab the one wrong thing is invisible.

Everything in a lab has a place, which is exactly why an open bottle on the wrong bench does not stand out. The people working there are concentrating on their own work, and the room looks the way it always looks.

This one is for lab staff, technicians and anyone who shares a bench with them. It is about the interruption: noticing something that belongs to somebody else's work, and doing something about it anyway.

What a team does in it

One run, three parts. A team can go back to any of them as often as it needs, and most do.

  1. 1

    Take in the room

A team comes into a working lab and finds what has been left out, what is running unattended and what is not labelled.

  2. 2

    Stop the right work

They decide what can wait and what cannot, and say it to the person whose work it is.

  3. 3

    Handle the incident

Something is spilled, and the nearest person is not the one who spilled it. They work through the first response.

What is included

Hazardous substances and fire

Laboratory safety

10–20 min per run

Included with every module

  • The training itself, repeated as often as you need.
  • Equipment supplied, maintained and replaced.
  • Attendance is recorded and exports into the records you already keep.
  • We run the first sessions with your team, then hand over.

Put it on your shortlist and we go through it together, with nothing to decide yet.

Next to it in the same cluster

Teams that meet this hazard usually meet the others on the same shift. The cluster page Hazardous substances and fire holds all of them together.

Take one bench and go through it.

Bring the part of your assessment that names laboratory work. We pick one situation and run the training end to end.

What happens in the demo

  1. You pick the hazard From your own risk assessment, not from a demo script.
  2. We go through the training Start to finish, the same version your people would get.
  3. We look at your site Who would run it, on which shifts, and what a first group needs.
